Webb Telescope spots new type of object: a 'black hole star'

Astronomers using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope have identified an entirely new type of cosmic object: a "black hole star" that combines characteristics of both a massive black hole and a giant star. This discovery, published in the journal Nature, could reshape the understanding of how the early structures of the universe formed.

The object, named MoM-BH*-1, was detected in the early universe just 660 million years after the Big Bang. A black hole that powers the star-like shell

Computer simulations showed that only a model combining a supermassive accreting black hole with a dense hydrogen gas envelope could reproduce the extraordinary brightness and spectral characteristics of MoM-BH*-1. Unlike a normal star powered by fusion, this object draws its energy from matter falling into the central black hole, while the surrounding gas creates its star-like appearance.

The object may have brightened by about 30 percent during the two months of observation, which is consistent with the black hole growing on surrounding material.

China deploys DeepSeek harness on national supercomputing platform
